A Two-Part Online Class

Abstract Landscape Painting in Mixed Media

based on Landscape and Nature

with Artist Sophia Rodionov (CanotStopPainting)

Join me for a unique and inspiring class where we’ll explore abstract painting techniques using watercolor and mixed media, all inspired by landscapes and nature. This class is designed to help you develop your creative process, improve composition skills, and experiment with different materials to create engaging, textured artworks.

Class Structure

Part 1 – Self-Paced Learning

You’ll get access to three prerecorded lessons that you can watch at your own pace. Each lesson comes with guided homework assignments to help you practice.

What you’ll learn in Part 1:
🎨 How to Work with References – Choosing inspiring starting points, combining multiple references effectively.
🎨 Composition Made Easy – Simple steps to create strong and engaging compositions.
🎨 Exploring Mixed Media – How to combine watercolor with dry materials (graphite, pencils, crayons) and layer gouache/acrylic to create contrasts and textures.
🎨 Hands-on Homework – Selecting references, sketching compositions, choosing color palettes, and practicing texture techniques.

Part 2 – Zoom Session on March 1, recording

In this 3-hour live session, we create a series of 3-4 paintings together, applying the techniques learned in Part 1. I demonstrate step by step, and you can either follow along with my references or use your own.

 ✨ Bonus – Community Support!

All students will be invited to a Telegram chat group where you can ask questions, share your work, and get feedback as you practice.

Lifetime Access – Your access to the lessons and recordings never expires, so you can learn at your own pace and revisit the content anytime.

MATERIALS WE USE IN A CLASS:

Paper

  • any watercolor paper more 300 gsm or more ( the more heavier the paper - more materials it will able to hold) - we will use at least 6 sheets of A3 or 12x16'' for artworks and studies
  • For sketches: loose sheets or a sketchbook for working with graphic materials

Paints and dry materials

  • Your usual watercolor paints set
  • Gouache or Acrylic - whatever you have in your home studio, we are not going to use too many colors. If you consider to buy and don't have any: it could be black and white, any basic blue and/or any basic orange.
  • Colors - complete freedom of creativity, the class is not limited to specific colors.
  • Watercolor pencils and/or watercolor crayons.
  • Several acrylic markers - colors you love. If you don't have any and need to buy - it could black and white thinest nib, plus 1-2 colors you love a lot in thicker size of nib 3-5mm
  • If you have acrylic inks or liquid watercolor or other inks, you can use them also. There is no need to buy, if you don't have any.

All the colors that I use could be replaced with others.

I would talk about and explain my general approach to colors choice and explain why it is not so important to have exactly the same colors as I use. One of the main goals of the class is ability to use your own color palettes, to choose colors and to use limited palette.

Also, if you don't have all kind of materials from the list, don't panic. I'm explaining the general approach of work with mixed media and there is no any problem to work with materials you have in your home studio.

Brushes

  • Hake brush with a wide soft hair for wetting the paper.
  • Also your usual work kit: it is important that you have brushes that are convenient for you to work with in several sizes - both for large washes and for details
  • It is advisable to have a liner brush with a small diameter and a long hair - it can be a classic rigger or you could use Chinese calligraphy brushes of different sizes.
  • 1-3 synthetic brushes for gouache or acrylic, it could be flat brush in one size, if you have more - take one flat in a bigger size and one round size 6-8

 Other Tools

  • Water bowl (x2).
  • Spray bottle with clean water.
  • Pencil: 2B–4B or charcoal for sketches, and a kneaded eraser or regular eraser.
  • Fountain pen or liners in different sizes (3,5 will be good)
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic card or palette knife
  • Printing roller
  • Wooden stick

This setup ensures you’re fully equipped for exploring both watercolor and mixed media, but again - if you don't have something, you will able to create in this class with materials you have.

What my students say

Carl

Once again Sophia Rodionov, professional artist has pulled out all the stops to make the latest tutorial fantastic. I joined in a 3 1/2 hour abstract nature tutorial having followed her work for a short while on Instagram. I previously had a great experience with her architectural offering in January. The preparation and effort Sophia makes is so noticeable. Abstract painting and composition was really just a word to me and I didn't know much about how to structure pieces. Sophia made exercises to follow in order to introduce abstract the week before the live session. It made the live session much easier. There was a lot to take in, which I like. All materials & recordings are also available afterwards online if you struggle to take it in. Again there is no pressure to show work or even have your camera on or join in. I do as I like to fully immerse myself in the experience. I highly recommend Sophia's courses if your interested in expanding your art and like her style. Her passion for art is contagious Thank you Sophia
